Increased Bilingualism in Signs Countrywide
With an increasing number of bilingual individuals in the United States comes the need for bilingual signs and indicators across the country. This is especially true of large urban cities and tourist destinations such as Boston, Chicago, Miami, and New York, but certainly not limited to those locations.
“Places near the U.S.-Mexico border, some signs are bilingual, both in English and Spanish. Additionally, large urban centers such as New York City, Chicago and others have bilingual and multilingual signage at major destinations” (Handbook of Bilingualism). With Spanish being the second most spoken language in the United States, this should come to no surprise. In fact, it would not be at all surprising if in a few years a law was passed for all major road signs and designators to have to be in both English in Spanish, essentially finalizing the integration of a bilingual American society.
